Required Papers Guide

Use the following questions as a guide:

  • Has the body of the paper been written according to the information in this handbook?
  • Is the paper within the 30-page limit?
  • Is the Research Summary well typed, without errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation?
  • Has someone proofread the paper?
  • Was the research actually conducted and data analyzed by the student?
  • Are all individuals or agencies who offered their assistance acknowledged?
  • Is the method used in research described in sufficient detail so that
anyone else may duplicate this work?
  • Have references to the Reference List been written in the correct format, using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 4th ed., (APA style) as resource for formatting?
  • Are there at least 10 cited references?
  • Are graphs and charts neatly constructed, attractive, and informative?

Avoid some of the common errors found in scientific composition: illogical grouping of facts, a change in point of view, repetition of facts, omission of the unit of measurement (for example, 15mL), omission of steps, inaccurate use of words, improper paraphrasing, exclusion of negative results (all data is valuable).

The paper must be typed, using double spacing, on only one side of each
sheet of paper.

The student’s last name and the title of the paper must be typed at the top left of the table of contents page. Each subsequent page should have the student’s last name and title of the paper at the top left (Example, Smith: The Effect of Sunlight on Plants).

A margin of 4 cm (1 ½”) must be maintained on the left side of each typed page. A margin of 2.5 cm (1") should be observed on the right side, top, and bottom of each page. All pages must be numbered and referenced in the table of contents.

The title page of this paper must be laid out as shown in the format shown here. The signature of the sponsoring teacher and the school coordinator as well as the student’s name, address, zip code, school, and grade must be positioned as shown in the diagram. The Abstract and the Research Summary are to be stapled together. Place the Abstract on top of the title page of the Research Summary. The papers are to have no binder or protective cover and must be securely stapled in the upper left corner. The exhibit number must be written in the upper right-hand corner of each copy of Abstract, Safety Sheet, and Title Page.
